Known as the “City of Bridges” (and home to more than 400 bridges), as well as “the Steel City” for its steel-manufacturing roots, southwestern Pennsylvania’s county seat has gone through quite a magical transformation in recent years. Not only is Pittsburgh the second largest city in Pennsylvania, it’s also home to the nation's fifth-largest bank, eight Fortune 500 companies, and global headquarters for six of the top 300 U.S. law firms.

All of this combined makes Pittsburgh and its surrounding 2.3 million residents a vibrant city, worthy of considering for a relocation — if you don’t already live here.

A recent post from the moving company Redfin.com shared eight of their Top Reasons to Move to Pittsburgh, which we’ve streamlined for you, below. And what’s not to love? Here’s our re-cap:

1.    Access to water ways and green spaces.

Pittsburgh is spread out over 58 square miles, but of that, over 2 square miles (nearly 5%) is water. Downtown Pittsburgh, also known as the “Golden Triangle,” lies right where the Allegheny River meets the Monongahela River to form the head of the Ohio River. These three rivers converge at Point State Park, home to 36 acres of lush recreational space.

All of this water translates into beautiful areas for kayaks, paddleboards, dining, river cruises, and more.

2.    A fabulous sports culture.

Talk about incredible team spirit. No matter which team, Pittsburgh represents — both at the professional and college level! Whether you want to live near and cheer for the Pirates of Major League Baseball, the Steelers in the NFL, or the NHL’s Penguins, Pittsburghers know they will compete.

3.    Affordable housing.

Earlier this year, Pittsburgh was ranked the most affordable city in the world for buying a home. This continues a trend of affordability. Back in 2019, Zillow ranked Pittsburgh as the most affordable place to live for renters. (Keep in mind that the price you pay for housing can also vary depending on the neighborhood.) Overall, Pittsburgh’s low cost of living makes it an attractive city for transplants, newcomers and old-timers alike.

4.    A thriving food scene.

From amazing coffee shops to exquisite fine dining, Pittsburgh brings a lot to the table, in every sense. As the Redfin post notes, “The food scene here offers endless cuisine options from around the world.”

5.    Arts and culture.

Earlier this year, we highlighted several of our favorite arts and culture hot spots in the thriving scene, if you have a weekend to spend in the Steel City. Pittsburgh is loaded with world-class opportunities!

6.    Theme park.

Looking for some family fun? One other reason to consider moving to Pittsburgh is for its theme park, Kennywood Park. Offering wild rides, tasty treats, roller coasters, and water rides, you’ll find live entertainment and exciting carnival games at “The Roller Coaster Capital of the World.”

7.    Weather.

Four seasons of fun means there’s something for everyone! From festive outdoor winter activities to concerts and festivals in the sunny (but not too hot) weather of summertime, Pittsburgh has bountiful opportunities for all.

8.    Neighborhoods.

Home to 90 unique neighborhoods, Pittsburgh brings a glorious connection between old world charm and new world tech, each with its own distinct flair. Whether you’re looking to rent or to buy, you truly can’t go wrong.
