“Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort.”

― Jane Austen

The prolific author Jane Austen knew a thing or two about staying home. And for many of us, it’s a wonderful feeling to simply relax in our own abode.

Perhaps you’ve got a long desire to watch a favorite show or movie, casually entertain friends, or simply relax unincumbered. Whatever the reason, finding a suitable and comfortable couch is a worthy ambition to help you enjoy your time at home.

So just how and where does one begin to shop for a new sofa? We’ve got you covered with a few keys to consider whenever you find yourself in the market for a new couch.

1.    Size does matter.

The room dimensions are a key component to selecting a new couch, along with the shape or footprint on the floor. Take plenty of measurements to allow for length and width, and you might even want to experiment with moving some masking tape to map out the feel of the piece you’d like to select.

2.    Shop and compare prices and styles at different companies.

Whether you prefer in-person or online purchasing, be sure to take the time to do some research and actually try out multiple options in person, in order to get a true feel for something you like. Which means going to the store, moving from couch to couch, and experimenting with whatever style of cushions you like best. In the current economy, availability can vary hugely as well, so keep that in mind when researching different manufacturers.

3.    Getting framed.

You’ll want to look for a solid, sturdy frame if you’re trying to find a sofa that will last. (A heavy couch is a strong indicator of quality that can endure the test of time.) More specifically, look for a piece with kiln-dried wood, as it removes the moisture that might lead to warped, cracked, squeaky sofas.

4.    Good couches are not cheap.

Unfortunately, quality furniture does come at a price. So be prepared to spend upwards of $2,000 or more for a couch that will last you in the next 15 or so years, rather than trying to get by with different $800 couches.

5.    You might not need a new couch, after all.

For some people, a fresh reupholstery job, professionally or DIY-stuffed cushions, or updated fabric on a few throw pillows could be enough to buy you some time before you truly fall in love with something you either cannot exactly afford or simply do not have space to accommodate. But if you’re relocating or moving into a new place soon, then starting to do your research now could save you time and money in the end.
