Where are you headed?

It’s a common question, as a growing number of Americans have decided to move — either searching for a different area with more space or a cheaper cost of living (or both). A closer look at moving trends last year shows that 82 percent of urban areas have seen more people moving out, while suburban areas saw more people moving in.

Last year saw more than 35 million address changes, both temporary and permanent, which is more than 10 percent of the U.S. population. The reasons? Growing expenses and finances were the top answers for why Americans moved in 2021. In addition, the rise in employees being able work from home has freed up people to live in more affordable cities like Nashville, San Antonio, and Tampa than before the global pandemic began.

The largest “export” states include states like New York, Illinois, New Jersey, and Connecticut. And where have they landed? Here, we break down the leading six “import” states for relocations.

Arizona

Known for its warm weather all year ‘round, the Grand Canyon state boasts plenty of outdoor recreation areas (including Grand Canyon National Park), exceptional golfing courses and communities, and incredible natural beauty and even mountain resort towns. In 2021, the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Chandler all experienced population growth. In addition, Tucson (home to the University of Arizona) is one of the best cities for remote work.

Florida

If you’re searching for a state with low property taxes and no state income tax, paired with access to some of the best beaches in the world, look no further than the Sunshine State. Buying a new house can be a challenge in certain regions, though, as Florida relocations continue to rise. Cities like Miami, Tampa, and Tallahassee offer fantastic weather, cultural diversity, and rich history. And of course, Orlando boasts Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Finally, Jacksonville offers one of the best places to work remotely, key for anyone who’s moving with a plan to keep working from home in a new city!

Idaho

Idaho is one of the least populated states in America, offering an abundance of wide-open spaces and incredible economic opportunities for both businesses and individuals. Cities like Meridian and Nampa are among the fastest-growing towns in the U.S. Idaho also maintains a low cost of living and low crime rates, making the Gem State a gem in itself for both retirees and families alike. If that’s not enough, the Rocky Mountains also offer fabulous outdoor playgrounds throughout much of Idaho, with world-class ski resorts like Sun Valley, Schweitzer, and Silver Mountain featuring top-notch terrain and deep powder runs.

North Carolina

Combining a low cost of living, attractive remote work climate, and an abundance of outdoor opportunities, North Carolina has quickly become a popular moving destination. From beaches on the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the mountaintop views along the Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina offers adventure seekers a great location for a variety of recreational activities. Tech- and education-savvy companies are also relocating to places like Durham, Raleigh, and Charlotte, with the added bonus of finding decently affordable housing for relocated employees and arts, entertainment, and professional opportunities found in big cities.

South Carolina

Like its sister Carolina state, The Palmetto State features a variety of geography and terrain — from the picturesque beaches and coastal islands to peanut-, cotton- and peach-filled farmlands. Compared to the national average, the cost of living in South Carolina is also considerably lower, with median home prices around $300,000. Lastly, Charleston, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach offer family-friendly towns with big-city amenities and modest winter temperatures.

Texas

Texas has seen continued growth in major metropolitan areas like Dallas and Austin, plus suburbs and smaller cities like Katy, Frisco, and Richmond have exploded during the pandemic due to a low cost of living and favorable tax rates. Texas also remains one of the best states to find work-from-home opportunities. Within the Lone Star State, you’ll find expansive hiking at Big Bend National Park, windsurfing at Padre Island, or even access to spray paint tapestries at Cadillac Ranch.
