Nothing spreads holiday cheer quite like a free parking spot during a busy shopping day. That’s why Pittsburgh City Council recently approved a moratorium on all parking fees at street meters and city owned parking lots on Friday and Saturdays until Christmas day in order to encourage local shoppers to buy local.

Whether you’ve just moved to the Pittsburgh area or are a long-time local – buying local is a great way to get out and get to know the city. And, with the city officials making it easier for you to shop downtown, it makes sense to start your shopping at the city center before going online.

Here are the dates when you can expect free city parking:

·  All Friday and Saturdays from Now Until 12/25

·  December 1

·  December 8

·  December 15

·  December 22

The Pittsburgh Parking Authority estimates that the city loses around $350,000 in revenue – but, they’re hoping for an increase in downtown traffic and local purchases. The goal is that the $350,000 would be an investment in the city that would prove to have a good ROI.

So, get out there and enjoy all that the city has to offer this holiday season – spend the money you would have paid for parking by supporting a local business and help our city to thrive and grow this season.
