For couples and families thinking about exploring Pittsburgh (not to mention eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia), a short weekend getaway trip might be on your upcoming to-do list if you need a city break from the ‘burgh. We’ve done a little research of our own and narrowed down our favorite weekend destinations for you.

Morgantown, West Virginia (1.5 hours away)

Heading into Mountaineer country has an abundance of outdoor fun as a city escape! There’s Coopers Rock State Forest, rail trails featuring multiple waterfalls, kayaking or boating at Cheat Lake Park, and the West Virginia Botanic Garden.

Wheeling, West Virginia (1.5 hours away)

You can see the birthplace of West Virginia, a.k.a. the West Virginia Independence Hall, dine at the Wheeling Centre Market, enjoy year ‘round fun at Oglebay Resort, or take in a minor league hockey game, the Wheeling Wailers, during hockey season.

Erie, Pennsylvania (2 hours away)

Have a beach fix? Head two hours north of the city, and you’ll land at Pennsylvania’s only beach at Lake Erie! Erie is a bit smaller than Pittsburgh, but there’s still plenty to see and do. From minor league sports to Presque Isle State Park and Presque Isle Lighthouse, to the Erie Zoo and Botanical Garden, to fabulous wineries. T

Cleveland, Ohio (2 hours away)

Talk about excitement for museum-goers and sports lovers. Cleveland has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the amazing Great Lakes Science Center, live theater at Playhouse Square, and an abundance of professional sports teams, even if they do bear the brunt of a lot of jokes.

Deep Creek, Maryland (2 hours away)

Deep Creek Lake is the main attraction where you can swim, boat, fish, and enjoy the lake views! This beautiful nature area is found nestled on the western side of Maryland, near the West Virginia border, and Deep Creek offers visitors a lovely vacation spot throughout the seasons. Attracting visitors from surrounding cities like Washington, D.C., Deep Creek also offers ziplining, go karts, arcades, horseback riding, and more!

Glamping in Style (2-3 hours away)

If you’re in the mood for a little bit rustic, but not too rustic, finding a spot for glamping might be the perfect compromise. From yurts in the peaceful Poconos to riverfront cabins complete with a private beach, you’ll find plenty of options all within a short drive, here.
