The Economic Policy Institute recently released its 2018 budget calculator that estimates how much it costs to live in 3,142 of America’s counties, which includes 611 metro areas.

Based on the calculator, it’s estimated that a family of two adults and two children would need to have a combined household income of $78,769 in order have a “modest yet adequate standard of living.” The calculator includes the metro areas of: Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Here’s how the group broke down that $78,768 or $6,564/month income:

·  Childcare: $1,414/month

·  Transportation: $1,173/month

·  Housing: $884/month

·  Taxes: $850/month

·  Healthcare: $832/month

What it doesn’t account for are things like student loans or savings for college accounts. The calculator goes beyond looking at poverty levels and tries to account for the items people need to thrive and live a more realistic standard of living.

The study found San Francisco to have the highest cost of living at $148,439/year for a two parent, two kid household – while Brownsville, Texas was the most inexpensive at $58,906.

If you would like to plug your family situation into the calculator to get a more accurate idea of month costs, you can find the Economic Policy Institute Calculator on their website.
